Abstract
Palm fibers and all natural fibers provide new opportunities for industry, especially
when managing waste disposals are of great concerns for the environment. This has
led to increasing pressure to recycle materials at the end of their useful life. In this
research, palm fibers were collected from five (5) types of palm trees planted in
Sebha city region. These natural fibers and some palm dates as well as some portions
of soils collected from regions near the same palm trees were studied using (XRF).
The analysis was performed on the fibers, dates and soils in order to identify their
elements that make them up and properties. It was surprising to find that the palm
fibers, the dates, and the soils contain almost similar elements such as Si, Ca, K, Al
etc. and even heavy metals such as Fe, Ti and Ni etc. Following such analysis, two
different experiments were carried out to explore more useful applications for palm
fibers. In the first experimental phase, bioplastic was prepared following an
experiment that consists of three steps. The first step was to prepare (NaOH). In the
second step, it is called bleaching. In the last step, the bioplastic was prepared, after
which the sample was cast and dried in aluminum molds at room temperature. In the
second experimental phase, Nano-material (COFe2O) was prepared and used with
palm fibers as an environmentally friendly material in the tests of removing crude oil
from sea water. This was done by using magnets with proportions (0.04% ) of palm
fibers and Nano-material. Very promising results were obtained when palm fibers
were utilized as composite materials in plastic and crude oil removal applications.
